Chicago proves intelligence isn’t required for public office

The recent affirmation by the United States Supreme Court that the 2nd Amendment does indeed apply equally to individuals in every state has brought forth a litany of lunacy from Chicago aldermen eager to thumb their noses at the decision.

Essentially the Court found that gun bans, as strict as the one in Chicago, cannot stand under the 2nd Amendment since they deny an individual’s constitutional right to own a firearm. Anyone with common sense can look at the statistics and see that Chicago being a “gun free” city is a joke considering the out-of-control murder rate. Chicago’s strict gun laws have done nothing but take defense out of the hands of law abiding citizens and give the power to would-be criminals and thugs.

Now, onto the lunacy in this story from the Chicago Sun Times:

Grumbling about a U.S. Supreme Court they say is out of touch with America’s cities, Chicago aldermen voted 45-0 today to approve a rushed-through compromise gun ban.

The law, weaker than the gun ban tossed out Monday but with some even stronger new provisions, allows adults in Chicago to buy one gun a month, 12 a year, but they must pay registration and permit fees and take five hours of training.

Just make a note of the fact that these 45 alderman do not believe in your constitutional rights nor do they have any ability to think rationally or semi-intelligently.

Here’s the evidence supporting my assertions:

The aldermen did not hold back their contempt for the five members of the U.S. Supreme Court who threw out the city’s gun ban Monday.

“No Supreme Court judge could live in my community and come to the same conclusion they did a couple days ago,” Ald. Sharon Denise Dixon (24th) said.

“I find it hard to believe that the Supreme Court justices that voted to strike our handgun laws have spent any time in the communities that many of us represent,” Ald. Toni Preckwinkle (4th) said.

“There’s no way if they knew the violence our young people face every day that they could decide this was a reasonable course of action.”

Let me ask the three alderman quoted there, can you look anyone straight in the eye and tell them your existing gun ban in Chicago is actually reducing crime? Clearly it has not nor do such laws ever reduce crime.

Now for the facts from Learn About Guns in this article from 2008:

As the Chicago Tribune reports, Chicago’s murder rate is up 18% over the same time frame last year. 62 people were killed in the month of July alone, and there were several high profile shootings, such as the Taste of Chicago shootings or the murder of a cop with his own gun. In the overwhelming majority of these murders, criminals used handguns, despite 20+ year long ban on handgun ownership in Chicago. Clearly, the criminals are ignoring the handgun ban.

As I’ve mentioned before, criminals ignore gun control laws. This should come as no surprise, as a person who is willing to commit murder will also be willing to violate a relatively minor gun possession law. Whether such criminals get their guns on the black market, steal guns from the police, or find some other creative way of getting guns, such criminals will be armed. The law abiding citizens, who were not going to commit a crime in the first place, are then left with no guns – making them easier targets for the criminals. This phenomenon is not unique to Chicago. Localities ranging, from suburban Oak Park, to the District of Columbia, have banned handguns only to see handgun related violence increase as a result of gun control laws. Making matters worse, handgun bans result in the prosecution of innocent citizens who acted to defend themselves and their children from home invaders. Chicago, Oak Park, and Illinois as a whole would do well to allow their citizens to defend themselves, rather than become crime statistics.

Criminals do not obey gun control laws, this should be abundantly obvious to the ignorant Chicago alderman who live within the violence. You would think these people would stop and ask themselves how criminals are able to obtain guns in the midst of a gun bad? I don’t know, let me go out on a limb, but perhaps criminals are not going through legal means to obtain guns nor do they care about Chicago being a “gun free zone!”
