NAPLES, Fla. – Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson quit the Republican presidential race on Tuesday, after a string of poor finishes in early primary and caucus states.
“Today, I have withdrawn my candidacy for president of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort,” Thompson said in a statement.
Thompson’s fate was sealed last Saturday in the South Carolina primary, when he finished third in a state that he had said he needed to win.
In the statement, Thompson did not say whether he would endorse any of his former rivals. He was one of a handful of members of Congress who supported Arizona Sen. John McCain in 2000 in his unsuccessful race against George W. Bush for the party nomination.
I can’t really say this is much of surprise, however I didn’t figure Fred to give up quite so fast. It will be interesting to see if he attempts to set himself up for VP status, or simply endorses one of his fellow party candidates. Nate is sure to have more with video on this later.
In other news Mike Huckabee’s campaign is having financial issues, resulting in staff reduction, and cut in pay for hangers on:

ATLANTA – In a sign of the financial difficulties facing Republican Mike Huckabee, his presidential campaign said Tuesday that top advisers are working without pay and some aides have left.
“Most people are staying on,” but a few have departed, adviser Ed Rollins said in an interview. “A number of people, including myself,” have agreed to forgo their pay in order to spend as much as possible on television ads in vital states, Rollins said.
Campaign contributions continue to come in, he said. But he acknowledged that the former Arkansas governor is stretched thin as he tries to compete in Florida’s primary next Tuesday and many of the two dozen states holding contests Feb. 5.
And the smart ones already bailed out…..

Just to finally add my two cents, mostly on Thompson. I’m betting that a lot has been going on behind the scenes by various candidates try and garner an endorsement from Thompson. He does have a substantial amount of supporters which could easily toss someone over the top in Florida among the three-way tie.
It appears that some of Fred’s supporters may be heading toward Romney in Florida already.
