DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Republican Fred Thompson, whose entry into the presidential race has been long anticipated, will officially launch his candidacy next week, campaign aides said Thursday.
The former Tennessee senator and “Law & Order” actor will disclose details about how he will formally enter the race after one of his top advisers briefs supporters in an afternoon conference call, said officials with knowledge of the plans.
They spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk publicly.
I will accept it as a probability but given the numerous other leaks saying when Thompson would announce, I remain mildly skeptical. Although, this coincides with the early September announcement so it will probably happen. In my opinion the man needs to announce like tomorrow to get the ball rolling.
Politico is reporting the following:
UPDATE: Still no official confirmation from the campaign, but Thompson sources now confirm that he will announce his candidacy next Thursday, Sept. 6. The launch will include a tour of Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Florida. As expected, Thompson will not appear at the GOP debate in New Hampshire on Wednesday, Sept. 5.
A Thompson campaign official says that they’ll issue a paper statement as to their plans later this afternoon.
So there it is. However, he has yet to jump in on the debate shindig which may or may not hurt him. In my humble opinion, he should have appeared in the Sept. 5th debate to get the ball rolling for him and take a spot on the national stage. However, I am no campaign adviser but it makes sense to me!

DES MOINES, Iowa – Republican Fred Thompson, whose entry into the presidential race has been long anticipated, will officially launch his candidacy Sept. 6 in a webcast on his campaign site, followed by a five-day tour of early primary states, The Associated Press has learned.

The Washington Post has this:
The source would not confirm Thompson’s appearance on Leno, but an official at NBC-Universal said the appearance is tentatively confirmed for Wednesday night. A second NBC official did not respond to an inquiry on Thompson.
If he appears on Leno, it could steal some thunder from the debate, which is being held in New Hampshire. Thompson pulled a similar trick when he first confirmed interest in the campaign, appearing on Fox News for an interview immediately following a previous Republican debate.
Real Clear Politics has the following:
Randy Enright, the national political director for Fred Thompson, just announced on a conference call with supporters that, “next Thursday on September 6 Senator Thompson will officially become a candidate for President of the United States.”
Enright said the announcement will come via webcast on Thompson’s site and will be immediately followed by a two-part grassroots tour that will begin in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and eventually get to Florida before winding up on September 15 with a “welcome home” rally in Thompson’s home town of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee.
