Hot Air has extensive and continuing coverage of the shooting incident at Virginia Tech this morning.
Pray for the victims and their families.
I personally find it infuriating that shootings always seem to happen in “gun-free zones”. When will people realize that “gun-free zone” is an invitation for lunatics to enter buildings and start shooting because they know nobody can defend themselves. When will people learn that guns can protect people? Campus security is armed with walkie-talkies and nothing more. This “gun-free zone” crap has got to stop.
I’m sorry, I never see shootings happen at gun shows.

Free Republic has some info on VA Tech’s decision on Jan 31st, 2007 NOT TO ALLOW students to carry guns on campus. Shameful.
Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill was defeated. “I’m sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly’s actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus.”
So safe in fact that since nobody could defend themselves, 32 innocent people have ended up dead by a gunman who knew there were no guns on campus. Of course, the cowardly gunman took his own life as usual.
The absence of guns for self-defense means people are less safe and this situation proves it. I’m so outraged at this situation because it could have been stopped sooner.
Update from The Angry American:
The Death toll has risen to 33 and as further reports eek out, it appears the only notice students had of this ongoing incident was an email notification 2 hours AFTER the initial shooting began. And these people running these college campuses have college educations ? It would seem to me the first thing to do is get on the loud speakers and clear the campus ASAP. Instead they emailed a letter out asking people to remain calm 2 hours and 33 dead bodies later.
Update @ 2:38am by Nate:
Joseph Farrah of WorldNetDaily shares my personal opinion:
Either no one dared say what I am about to say or no one who believes what I am about to say was invited to participate in the free-for-all on 24-hour tragedy TV.
There is a way to stop this.
There is a way to prevent this.
We’ve followed this simple recipe in the past with good success.
All it takes is common sense and the guts to implement tried-and-true policies.
Here it is: It’s time to abandon the totally failed plans of turning our schools and campuses into “gun-free zones,” which, when they are invaded like Virginia Tech was invaded yesterday, become shooting galleries with live, captive, helpless, human targets.
I hate to be one who runs out and trumpets some cause right after a tragedy but frankly I am so angered that this even happened. We trust our “leaders” to protect us. They fail us all the time and yet they refuse to allow us to protect ourselves when they fail.
In fact, simply the knowledge that any student or any faculty member could be armed might have prevented this unknown assailant from hatching his deadly scheme of mass murder on campus.
As my friend Larry Pratt, executive director of Gun Owners of America, points out, “Isn’t it interesting that Utah and Oregon are the only two states that allow faculty to carry guns on campus. And isn’t it interesting that you haven’t read about any school or university shootings in Utah or Oregon? Why not? Because criminals don’t like having their victims shoot back at them.”
That’s the truth and I just have such compassion for the victims and their families. What makes me more angry is that it just didn’t have to happen if it weren’t for these “gun-free zones” which end up being “sitting-duck zones”.
