Flash: Edwards Making Major Announcement Thursday

From the AP:

WASHINGTON (AP) – Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards accompanied his wife, Elizabeth, who has been treated for breast cancer, on a doctor’s visit Wednesday. His campaign said they would hold a news conference in their hometown Thursday to discuss her health.

Campaign officials refused to answer any questions about what the Edwardses learned at the doctor’s appointment or how it might affect his candidacy. Edwards had cut short a trip to Iowa Tuesday night to be with his wife Wednesday but still attended a barbecue fundraiser later in the evening in their hometown of Chapel Hill, N.C.

The campaign had said that Mrs. Edwards had a follow-up appointment to a routine test she had Monday. The campaign explained that she had similar follow-ups in the past but they always resulted in a clean bill of health.

The campaign refused to elaborate Wednesday. Family friends said Wednesday night that they didn’t know of any new complications to her health.

If I was a betting man, I’d say he’s out. I’d say his wife’s health is going to be his ticket out of the race. His poll numbers are weak, he’s now lost South Carolina to Hillary. Nobody’s going to give him another shot at the VP spot.

I could be wrong, maybe he’ll be announcing something else. I can’t imagine what, but, it could be anything.

Update:

Nope, he’s still in:

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina (Reuters) – Democrat John Edwards said on Thursday he will continue his campaign for the White House even though his wife Elizabeth has suffered an incurable recurrence of the cancer that struck her in 2004.

“The campaign goes on. The campaign goes on strongly,” Edwards, a former senator from North Carolina and the 2004 Democratic vice presidential nominee, said at a news conference in his hometown with Elizabeth at his side.

“The bottom line is her cancer is back. We are very optimistic about this because, having been through some struggles together in the past, we know, the key is to keep your head up,” he said.

Say a prayer for Elizabeth Edwards. As for his campaign, it will need to be strong since I still think he’s going nowhere.
