As a self confessed political nerd, I must say the $10 of cuts to every $1 in taxes response during the Iowa debate was cringe worthy. Apparently it only takes eight folks to produce a mob mentality! Rick Perry may win the nomination based solely on the fact that he was not there to raise his hand.
Personally, I’ll take a 10:1 deal every day and twice on the weekends. It’s exactly the deal you want to make; if some twisted form of ideological purity is not in the way. That deal would go a long way toward fixing our situation, hell even THE Situation would figure out that’s a good deal. I can see the ads now; super slow motion of Republican candidates raising their hands to the heavens as 10:1 in a circle with that red bar across it indicating NO fades into the picture!
No common sense? No one stepping up to the mike to say hey guys, don’t go for that hand raising gambit? We’ve seen this hand raising thing before; offer to answer the question; refuse to raise your hand as an answer! It is one thing to be accused of extremism by your opponents it’s entirely another to self apply a neon label to your forehead on national television. In the context of that question everyone on stage should have been wearing “I’m With Stupid” tee shirts with the arrows pointing in both directions.
Yea, yea I know, talking to the base, it’s Iowa; blah, blah, blah. However, you need to be aware that they’ve got this neat new thing out called video. You get to play it over and over again. Your opponent doesn’t have to say a thing; he just has to show you hanging yourself on your very own Petard.
Then of course we come to the projection of the reality. The reality is that not a one of you, in a position to make that decision, would pass on 10:1. That’s not conservatism, that’s crazy talk. Conservatism is supposed to, at least minimally, recognize realities as a basis from which to move the argument. Unless of course “You’re With Stupid”!
