Over the past couple months, the facts about the various bills moving their way through congressional committees seem to only be coming out from concerned Americans, not politicians. I continue to urge anyone who cares about this topic to examine and get familiar with the actual legislation being debated.
I have some resources to share below which will point you in the right direction.
First and foremost, the two prominent bills being discussed are HR 3200 in the House of Representatives and the Affordable Health Choices Act currently being debated in the Senate HELP Committee.
Links to the full text of each bill as a PDF:
HR 3200 Full Version (House)
Affordable Health Choices Act (Senate HELP Committee)
Simply opening the link will make you more informed than the Democrats in congress, President Obama and the proponents of such legislation who refuse to disclose the true content.
The full text of the bills comes courtesy of Betsy McCaughey, former New York State Lt. Governor, who has spent time pouring over each of these bills and reporting on the actual content, not the lies put forth daily by the White House.
Some sampling of the Obamacare mythbusting from McCaughey:
Correcting the Untruths About Obama’s Health Plan!
Obama says: “But keep in mind – I mean this is something that I can’t emphasize enough – you don’t have to participate. If you are happy with the health care that you’ve got, then keep it.”
THE TRUTH: The health bills now before Congress would force you to switch to a managed-care plan with limits on your access to specialists and tests.
Two main bills are being rushed through Congress with the goal of combining them into a finished product by August. Under either, a new government bureaucracy will select health plans that it considers in your best interest, and you will have to enroll in one of these “qualified plans.” If you now get your plan through work, your employer has a five-year “grace period” to switch you into a qualified plan. If you buy your own insurance, you’ll have less time.
And as soon as anything changes in your contract – such as a change in copays or deductibles, which many insurers change every year – you’ll have to move into a qualified plan instead (House bill, p. 16-17).
When you file your taxes, if you can’t prove to the IRS that you are in a qualified plan, you’ll be fined thousands of dollars – as much as the average cost of a health plan for your family size – and then automatically enrolled in a randomly selected plan (House bill, p. 167-168).
It’s one thing to require that people getting government assistance tolerate managed care, but the legislation limits you to a managed-care plan even if you and your employer are footing the bill (Senate bill, p. 57-58). The goal is to reduce everyone’s consumption of health care and to ensure that people have the same health-care experience, regardless of ability to pay.
Obama says: “I want to start by taking a new approach that emphasizes prevention and wellness so that instead of just spending billions of dollars on costly treatments when people get sick, we’re spending some of those dollars on the care they need to stay well, things like mammograms and cancer screenings and immunizations, common-sense measures that will save us billions of dollars in future medical costs.”
THE TRUTH: The truth is that the second most prevalent disease of aging — cancer — is largely linked to genetics and unknown causes. It’s occurrence increases with age. Your risk of being diagnosed with cancer doubles from age 50 to 60 according to the National Cancer Institute.
The risk of some forms of heart disease can be reduced through healthy living. But other forms are linked to genetics. Shifting resources from treatment to prevention will leave patients who become sick inadequately cared for. In addition, virtually all studies show that prevention saves lives but not money. Eighty percent of preventive interventions add to medical costs. The reason is simple. Most people who take cholesterol lowering drugs or get mammograms wouldn’t get sick anyway. Louise Russell, an economist at Rutgers University, concludes that “hundreds of studies have shown that prevention usually adds to medical costs.” (Health Affairs, March-April 2009). The evidence is so conclusive that the only people who claim prevention saves money are politicians.
Obama says: “Nobody is talking about reducing Medicare benefits. Medicare benefits are there because people contributed into a system. It works. We don’t want to change it.”
THE TRUTH: The Congressional majority wants to pay for its $1 trillion health bills with a $500+ billion cut to Medicare. This cut will come just as Medicare enrollment increases by 30%. Less money and more patients will necessitate rationing.
The assault against seniors began in February with the stimulus package, which slipped in comparative effectiveness research, generally a code for limiting care based on the patient’s age. Economists are familiar with the formula, where the cost of a treatment is divided by the number of years that the patient is likely to benefit. In Britain, the formula leads to denying treatments for older patients who have fewer years to benefit from care than younger patients.
In a 7/17 letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, White House budget chief Peter Orszag urged Congress to delegate its authority over Medicare to a newly created body within the executive branch. This measure is designed to circumvent the democratic process and avoid accountability to the public for cuts in benefits.
It is so incredibly easy to dispute the things stated by President Obama and his supporters by simply quoting directly from the legislation, something they refuse to do for political reasons.
President Obama continually states things which are not true concerning the health care legislation currently being debated in congress. It’s amazing that in this day of the internet where citizens have immediate access to the actual word-for-word legislation, Democrats and Obamacare proponents would attempt to distort the reality of the debate.
For more resources in exposing the truth contained in these bills, see the following:
Ten Questions Politicians Won’t Answer
Questions for your health care town hall: Sec. 1401 and miscellany
Questions for your health care town hall: Secs. 122-124
Questions for your health care town hall: Secs. 411 and 412
Polls show support for Obamacare dropping like a rock and it’s because of concerned citizens exposing this legislation and using their First Amendment right to free speech. Independents also seem to be siding with the Town Hall questioners, not President Obama.
I’ll end with this clip from the Arlen Specter Town Hall in Lebanon, Pennsylvania yesterday:
That man, in his calm and collected demeanor, is exactly correct on every single point. In a 2 minute question, he broke down the crux of this discussion and schooled Senator Specter on what actually matters in this debate. The small fraction of people who want insurance but cannot afford it, that is who we may consider focusing on as a discussion. For the majority of the country who are satisfied or very satisfied with their care, leave them alone.

As knowledge of bussing and set-up question by little girl spreads of obama’s recent town hall meeting, great outcries should be heard.
Obama cast doubt on ‘angry mob’, ‘un-American’, ‘KKK’ freedom fighting heroes. Name-calling that should be held as badges of honor.
Obama gave the ‘metal of Freedom’ to handicapped Hawken. Who under obama’s health care, may not have been allowed to live. He uses his computer with stick inserted in his mouth. He proved existence of ‘Black hole’
Shame on Obama. He Should Be Impeached right away! Get on it Bill! He is a liar! hahaha
Yes, he created this above board and tranparency. He is doing less cleaning up super toxic sites than Bush. Obama is not even Green President… A liar..
Well once again, Nate, you have only exaggerated the truth in an effort to try and scare people with supposed truth.
Still, I am 100% glad you posted the links of the bills because the truth is in the pudding so lets get to it.
First your issue of
From the Bill itself : The Administration shall be headed by a Health Choices Commissioner (in this division referred to as the ‘‘Commissioner’’) who shall be appointed by the President, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate.
This is no different than what we do for supreme court justices and the last time I had seen we haven’t elected Grocery clerks to the supreme court. In General, even though some people don’t like the picks, the presidents of the past and present with the confirmation of the senate have picked qualified people to fill these kinds of rolls so most likely this position is going to be filled by some one in the medical field and not by some random politician.
However, moving on to the idea of “managed-care plan with limits on your access to specialists and tests”
As stated in Section 123 establishes a Health Benefits Advisory Committee that makes recommendations on what types of health insurance coverage will be defined as basic, enhanced or premium. The committee will be chaired by the surgeon general, with members appointed by the president, the comptroller general, and representatives of federal agencies. This committee makes recommendations on insurance regulations, so in that sense it does set standards for benefits. But it does not make decisions about treatments for individuals.
This is much the same as how it currently works with current insurance agencies that work to set the standards of basic or premium plans with the one exception that as it stands right now insurance agencies can increase out-of-pocket spending and premiums depending on illness or so on. To where the bill in section 122 stipulates that out-of-pocket spending ceiling to $5,000 for an individual and $10,000 for a family, indexed for inflation. It says nothing about rationing or limiting treatment.
Finally, People who don’t get insurance through work or other groups will go to the health care exchange; it’s designed to help people who have to go off on their own to buy health insurance, and for small businesses with few employees. The reason for the exchange is that the government wants to regulate insurers to make sure that health plans clearly explain what they offer, can’t refuse people for pre-existing conditions, and must offer basic levels of service.
This is designed to protect consumers from plans that have outrageous cost-sharing or really limited benefits. It’s to ensure that they’re actually getting coverage and not a junk policy.
IMPORTANT POINT…
‘Set up town meeting’ Prez pulls another idiot stunt. Missed cost of leg amputation by 30 x. Hillary when working on health bill for husband had $100,000 budget and spent $18 million. Yep, as obama says, no debt from health care. Biggest spender and biggest liar in American history.
“The reason for the exchange is that the government wants to regulate insurers to make sure that health plans clearly explain what they offer, can’t refuse people for pre-existing conditions, and must offer basic levels of service.”
The government isn’t capable of regulating or controlling itself or doing any of those things listed. You’re insane if you actively want government running health care and making these decisions.
JD, you always ignore decades of failed government programs and act like this time it will be better. People with half a brain know better. Your arguments are pathetic and not backed by facts.
84% of people with insurance are “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with their care. Even 46% of those without insurance say the same. We’re talking about maybe 10 million people, if that, who want insurance but can’t afford it. Where’s the crisis?
You’ve become a joke in how you try to prop up failing government politicians. Plus, you keep using the excuse of “insurance companies do this already” when defending Obamacare.
May I ask then, what is the point of Obamacare since you think insurance companies are evil but Obamacare, according to you, will do the same things. Think about that much? I read it all the time from you and always wonder if you realize how ignorant it actually sounds.
You’re so dumb sometimes you negate your own arguments, it’s funny. I read your comment but wondered if it was worth responding since you do a good job of arguing yourself into an intellectually barren corner.
Perhaps conservatives can fix health care. Lets sit back and see if they can fix the VA, fix medicare, medicaid, and let them answer to those who can not afford health care. Where are all the people who are slipping through the cracks when conservatives are posting videos of angry people yelling and screaming at congress/senate? That part is probably edited out I’m sure.
kENDALE
Do a little research on subject on your own. Would you like me to teach you how to look things up ??? Instead of always wanting others to answer your questions. You say you watch Fox, they talk about it. Don’t expect to be spoon feed.
I didn’t ask you a question. Honestly, I don’t think I ever ask you to teach me anything, ever, I mean, ever. There are question in which people are not actually looking for an answer. Rhetorical? Yea. You know us liberals, we’re full of rhetoric right? Haven’t you learn that yet, or are you incapable of learning?
Such hostlity. You are so funny and acting like a idiot. This is NOT a RHETORIC WEB SITE. As long as you have been coming here I though you noticed we DISCUSS HERE !!!!! Not make GRAND STAND STATEMENT.
Try to keep it be·liev·a·ble.
Don’t be a Douche, Nate. It doesn’t become you. However, I will talk to you like a fifth grader because it is apparent that you can’t understand basic concepts.
The reason why I point out that “Obama-care” has similar functions of what is already out there is for 2 reasons.
First, that Obama’a plan is to improve and compete not take over and the evidence is presented by proving that there are similarities amongst what the government is looking to offer as an insurance provider. It wouldn’t be competitive if that wasn’t the case and with how much you whine, bitch, and complain that he is taking over healthcare… One would think you could understand that is required but again if anything has Obama next to it you will play little “bo peep” and claim the sky is falling.
Secondly, the issue isn’t what our current system is offering or working with which means much of the plan is already in place in the private market but it is completely unregulated and “free-market” competition is not there to make the changes needed. Plus, the free market leaves many to take the risks of being un-insured during some part of their lives or for the entirety of it which is ultimately a burden on the government and Tax Payers.
Finally, you are so ignorant on this issue that you forget the Percentage of the population that is already on government healthcare. Specifically the elderly so when you say that 84% of the population is satisfied than you are also taking into consideration that 30% of that number means they are satisfied with Government care as is and by the way medicare and medicade are expected to have a 30% boost in the next 4 years as more baby boomers can’t afford private insurance.
Also, the reason why most people are satisfied is because the government has set up regulation on how insurance can be supplied to employers so many who have insurance through their work are satisfied but they are too stupid to understand or betting that nothing will happen to their job or to them when they are without a job because Private insurance is ridicules.
And in case you haven’t noticed more and more companies are dropping their insurance policies or reducing them because they are too costly.
To end, i would just like to say that I defend logic and reason not irrational fears and panic. That is why you and I see things so differently.
Jd must of enjoyed the story about that steam engine that keep on pushing and made it. I think I can. I think I can.
Keep trying you may win one with Nate. In wonderland, if you wish upon a star…

A simplified break down may help to understand…

Sounds like this is good for business doesn’t it. Not. More won’t have jobs, those without will be out longer. Raises ,well, just be happy. You’ll have long wait but have insurance ???
In other words JD “You still hold forth the view that it is entirely possible to pickup a turd by the CLEAN END”
“POLITICAL NECESSITIES SOMETIMES TURN OUT TO BE POLITICAL MISTAKES”………….GEORGE BERNARD SHAW
No DDM… See you only see one way or another. I didn’t say anything about a clean hand.
If fact what I am saying is to pick up the turd in the cleanest way but not to leave it in the living room where everyone has to deal with the foul stench of failure we call our healthcare system.
But lets be clear. No one’s hands are clean…but some people look like they have been rolling in the turd and have eaten so much of it that they like the Turd right where it is.
Don’t get me wrong DDM. I think you are more sophisticated. You eat the turn with a fork and knife. I guess it just isn’t for me though so you enjoy but it is time to clean house.
I see you like your sayings so the more appropriate one is “Sometimes you have to get your hands dirty” and “some one has to take out the trash”.
A idiot wants it done now at any cost. A wise man wants it done right, and knows the differnts.
See bill, You said something smart. You just described what the healthcare reform is looking to do.
Healthcare reform has been waiting for years to be done right and the good news is it is happening right now.
Now don’t go ruining this moment by posting anything more…let’s just be happy that for once you were able to add more validity to my argument.
JD
I agree with you. Change is past due. How, is the issue. Glad we could agree. Whatever the side we represent, good folks are in each.

Another coffen. Try the truth. Sarah lets the Sunshine in..
“On Aug. 11th our own Houston Chronicle displayed a picture of Shelia Jackson Lee hugging a woman who had asked a question at the townhall as well, but her question was in full support of the health care bill. The woman was identified as “Dr. Roxana Mayer, a pediatric primary care physician.” Turns out, she isn’t a doctor at all though. She had identified herself to the Chonicle that way though.”
“Patterico, a lawyer and LA blogger smelled something fishy, found her on MySpace, saw that she was clearly not a doctor, and e-mailed her to ask her to make sure. She did e-mail back and admit to the lie. It seems she was also an Obama delegate (actually true), which she also told the Chronicle, but the reporter failed to mention that little fact about her.
So, here we have someone asking a question, giving favor in support of the health care bill, posing as a doctor to give more credibility to her support. When in reality she was an Obama delegate and NOT a doctor.
“After the plants at Obama’s townhalls, and now this, it’s beyond amusing and ironic that the Democrats accuse the Tea Parties of being “manufactured.”
“You guys are shameless.”
“Update II: Some commenters are saying that this woman is not an Obama delegate either. I have no way of verifying that. But I wanted to make clear that she may have lied about that as well.”

The president’s FedEx/UPS/Postal Service slip is just one of his many health-care gaffes

If private health care companies could cross State lines and freely compete…, but government regulation will not allow.
Prez mouth turning conservative. Maybe he will become a Republican. Another first for America….
“First, that Obama’a plan is to improve and compete not take over and the evidence is presented by proving that there are similarities amongst what the government is looking to offer as an insurance provider.”
After I finished laughing, let me respond. Obamacare will most certainly not improve care or competition, as it seeks to stifle competition, not create it. Don’t be a tool of the administration. Again, not facts or figure to back it up, pathetic. Here’s a thought, read the bill(s)!
“Secondly, the issue isn’t what our current system is offering or working with which means much of the plan is already in place in the private market but it is completely unregulated and “free-market” competition is not there to make the changes needed.”
Again, laughter subsiding. The current market is most certainly not “unregulated” right now. Have you heard of Medicare and Medicaid? Did you know, and I’m sure you didn’t, that hospitals end up over-charging private insurance to make up for the payments they get jipped on from the government programs? The government has driven up the cost of the health care, it is the law of unintended consequences. Again though, you wouldn’t know because you don’t research.
We need market-based reform, keep the government out of it.
Here’s the real kicker, JD. You refuse to acknowledge anything on Bill’s lengthy list of provisions which are actually taken from the legislation. I call that check and mate my uninformed, propaganda eating friend.
You can’t respond to the text of the bill, which proves my point every single time. You repeat Obama’s empty rhetoric like, “we’re going to make it better,” then refuse to explain how nationalizing health care makes it better.
See Bill’s list here.
Every time I think you might respond with substantive facts, I am pleasantly surprised to see that you did not.
Our community leader got his job through Bill Ayers. Along with funding. Obama then funded Bill Ayers. Obama funded Abortion group and Acorn. Abortion group and Acorn funded Obama’s election. As President, Obama got government funding for abortion group and Acorn and unions. Health care for sure will fund Acorn, and no doubt same for abortion group.
Guess what party will receive help in future campaigns from abortion group, Acorn, and unions. We are seeing Acorn at town hall meeting with their Acorn shirts and riding in on buses. As well as unions. Democrats are stacking the deck for funding fuure elections, with tax dollars. Just as Obama stacked the crowd at his town meetings.
So goes Chicago political corruption. So goes Washington. So goes health care. So goes America down the drain.
A important point. Obama can use his power with his abortion group, Acorn, and unions (in votes and contributions) as leverage to get democrat congress member to ‘toe the line’ in their voting.

Blah, Blah, blah… deny it if you want but just save your energy for your next anti-Obama topic. Wait when was the last time you posted something that you agree on that Obama has done? Oh… sorry, I forgot Obama doesn’t do anything right. You got me nate. Wow. you are good… way to prove your point that you are open minded.
It is called being closed minded but I respect you anyway. You are essentially the equivalent of the idiot who lives on the side of a volcano and has to wait until everything is broken and is crashing down on him before his eyes are opened to why everyone has evacuated and by that time it is too late.
Don’t get me wrong, I liked Kendale’s Idea of letting you opt out of the system and also declining you Medicare and Medicaid later because you chose not to be apart of the solution and when you complain, I will tell you to contact your private insurance company with your issues…Oh wait, you won’t have a private insurance company to go to.
In this way it would weed out all of you idiots who just don’t get it. See I do believe in free marketsurvival of the fittest.
Still, lets see what parts of the bill I specifically quoted or referenced to you because you apparently don’t know how to read…
So don’t give me you kindergarten crap that shockingly seems to always be coming from you… Just because you refuse to crack open the bill and read the sections I referenced for yourself doesn’t mean it wasn’t supplied to you or read by me.
WHAT!??? hahahahahahaha!!!! Can’t stop laughing. Nate, you do realize that the government picks up the check on any unpaid bills from illegals, legals, insured, un-insured, medicare, medicaid that are left to the hospitals when they are unable to pay.
That is hysterical… Medicare and Medicade are causing the hospitals to charge more to the insurance companies…. I guess that explains the 60-75%+ off that insurance companies get. lol.
Again, I hope they put a clause in the bill that will allow you to permanently opt out of any government care for the rest of your life. I guarantee you aren’t that dumb to sign it but it would be great to put that paper in front of you.
“Don’t forget, Nate, you are ANTI-OBAMA and not pro-solution.”
Not true. I oppose bad policy which is what Obama is proposing.
I disagree with Obama philosophically so it is hard to find common ground when I know, and history has proven, that he is wrong on many things.
I intelligently use history as my guide, you moronically use Obama as yours.
“Again, I hope they put a clause in the bill that will allow you to permanently opt out of any government care for the rest of your life. I guarantee you aren’t that dumb to sign it but it would be great to put that paper in front of you.”
Maybe the dumb one here is the one wanting the same people bankrupting social security, medicare, medicaid and other government programs to begin running a bankrupt health care system too. JD, check a mirror.
I see the things government fails at which is running giant social programs. You see the failure and want more of it which makes you either ignorant, incompetent, or both.
I want solutions, not nationalization. Nationalization is not a solution nor will it affect risings costs. The CBO says it will increase costs, but don’t let facts get in the way of your own stupidity.
Either way, JD, Obama dropped the public option today so America has won. Thankfully enough people with more brains that you’ll ever have spoke out against lunacy and government failure.
Someday when you grow up and realize the government (which doesn’t just include Obama) is not the solution to your problem, government is the problem, you will thank me personally and probably send me a nice greeting card.
Blah, blah, blah… as usual. I stand by the fact that a government insurance program is a viable solution. I started out this healthcare topic saying that there is more than one way to skin a cat and there are multiple bills being passed around.
No matter what, regulation needs to be put in place and healthcare reform needs to happen.
The piece of 1,000 page garbage certainly isn’t the answer. If for no other reason than the graft given to Acorn. Which certainly isn’t its only bad point.
Why would any THINKING person trust them again. The new replacements coming as elections occur might be better time. Let this Congress stand adjourned until replaced.
Obama made mistake allowing people to read this bill. Gives him new name GRAFTGIVERANDRECEIVER
Obama did make mistake recently and spoke the truth. To paraphrase, Fed Ex and their competition are doing well. Government’s post office is still losing money.
Loosen restriction on health care by changing Tort laws. Allow them to cross State lines. Limit liability, which lowers Doctor and hospital malpractice cost. As well as helps drug companies. Eliminate repetitive test needed for lawsuit reasons.
These steps allow more competition and lowers cost for citizens.
Government staying out of health care is answer, not co-op nor government option. Not creating another $ trillions in debt replica of social security, medicare, medicad, and post office.
Let health care be another Fed Ex.. Health care now is tied down…We only have to look to Canada and England public health care.
Obama’s compassion for the elderly..
