Senator Arlen Specter (now a D, used to be an R) held a Town Hall on health care earlier this morning and the results were more tempered in terms of the rowdiness, however, the questions and content remained the same. People were there to oppose Obamacare in droves and had excellent questions, few of which the senator actually answered well.
Here’s the video. It is 13 minutes and worth it right up to the end.
Every question is spot-on and no representatives have good answers with regard to government failure and constitutionality of what the federal government should be involved in.

In all seriousness, it is cool that there are that many people showing for these town hall meetings. I wonder though what would happen if you got half the room where people are for and the other against? Greasers vs. the Preps. I think there would be a rumble… The Outsiders, style!
I would just like to add how great it is that we are even having this discussion in the US. I mean, for people to finally realize how broken the system currently is is step one. Now agreeing on a solution is step 2… grab a snickers we could be here a while.

THE PRESIDENT: Well, I think it’s an excellent question, so I appreciate the chance to respond. First of all, I want to make a distinction between a universal plan versus a single-payer plan, because those are two different things.
A single-payer plan would be a plan like Medicare for all, or the kind of plan that they have in Canada, where basically government is the only person — is the only entity that pays for all health care. Everybody has a government-paid-for plan, even though in, depending on which country, the doctors are still private or the hospitals might still be private. In some countries, the doctors work for the government and the hospitals are owned by the government. But the point is, is that government pays for everything, like Medicare for all. That is a single-payer plan.
I have not said that I was a single-payer supporter because, frankly, we historically have had a employer-based system in this country with private insurers, and for us to transition to a system like that I believe would be too disruptive. So what would end up happening would be, a lot of people who currently have employer-based health care would suddenly find themselves dropped, and they would have to go into an entirely new system that had not been fully set up yet. And I would be concerned about the potential destructiveness of that kind of transition.
All right? So I’m not promoting a single-payer plan.
I am promoting a plan that will assure that every single person is able to get health insurance at an affordable price, and that if they have health insurance they are getting a good deal from the insurance companies. That’s what I’m fighting for. (Applause.)
Now, the way we have approached it, is that if you’ve got health care under a private plan, if your employer provides you health care or you buy your own health care and you’re happy with it, you won’t have to change.
What we’re saying is, if you don’t have health care, then you will be able to go to an exchange similar to the menu of options that I used to have as a member of Congress, and I can look and see what are these various private health care plans offering, what’s a good deal, and I’ll be able to buy insurance from that exchange. And because it’s a big pool, I’ll be able to drive down costs, I’ll get a better deal than if I was trying to get health insurance on my own.
This is true, by the way, for small businesses, as well. A lot of small businesses, they end up paying a lot more than large businesses per person for health care, because they’ve got no bargaining power, they’ve got no leverage. So we wanted small businesses to be able to buy into this big pool, okay?
Now, the only thing that I have said is that having a public option in that menu would provide competition for insurance companies to keep them honest.
Now, I recognize, though, you make a legitimate — you raise a legitimate concern. People say, well, how can a private company compete against the government? And my answer is that if the private insurance companies are providing a good bargain, and if the public option has to be self-sustaining — meaning taxpayers aren’t subsidizing it, but it has to run on charging premiums and providing good services and a good network of doctors, just like any other private insurer would do — then I think private insurers should be able to compete. They do it all the time. (Applause.)
I mean, if you think about — if you think about it, UPS and FedEx are doing just fine, right? No, they are. It’s the Post Office that’s always having problems. (Laughter.)
So right now you’ve got private insurers who are out there competing effectively, even though a lot of people get their care through Medicare or Medicaid or VA. So there’s nothing inevitable about this somehow destroying the private marketplace, as long as — and this is a legitimate point that you’re raising — that it’s not set up where the government is basically being subsidized by the taxpayers, so that even if they’re not providing a good deal, we keep on having to pony out more and more money. And I’ve already said that can’t be the way the public option is set up. It has to be self-sustaining.

Physicians already push pain medication on elderly people instead of doing surgery. You know why? Old people are not good candidates for surgery because they do not do well under anesthesia. If you don’t believe me, go visit an elderly person after they have gone under anesthesia. Wait, see them before, then after, and tell me if it was a good idea.
I’ve seen lots of them over the past 3 years. Honestly when we, the nurses at my hospital, see otheropedic, and other surgeons, doing surgeries on these elderly people we are sickened. I mean there have been elderly people who have not walked in years, getting hip and knee replacements. And for what? They have not walked in years, and never will walk. Tell me that isn’t a waste of tax dollars chucked at medicare?
Or you see an elderly person with half their wits about them before a surgery, and come out of surgery with dementia and never become lucid again. So don’t give me the crap about throwing pills at old people instead of surgery. They already do that NOW! And with perfect reason for not doing the damn surgery.
Stop with the lame arguments man. There are tons of reason to not have a single payer options. Stick to the ones that make sense.
Man, nursing homes are chucked full of dying old people who don’t even know who they are anymore or anyone else around them. We spend money doing things that will give them 2-3 more years of life and for what? So they cane urinate and defecate on themselves for 2-3 more years and still not have a clue who they are or their family, or how to feed themselves. It’s sickening if you ask me.
I don’t know about you, but when I am demented and incontinent, please, by no means do anything to help me to survive in such a state! Plus, why waste the money. Maybe this is why medicare is bankrupt, we throw money at nearly dead patients for worthless treatments!

Kendale, the woman in that video speaking to Obama said her 100-year-old mother was very coherent and loved life. To that, Obama replied she should take a pain pill and die.
You missed the point about people who are coherent and don’t want to be written off for dead simply because they are elderly.
Try to show some compassion instead of acting like everyone over age 75 is incoherent and should be put out of their misery.
I have a grandmother aged 92, she is in perfect health and loves life, her family, her faith and is the greatest person I know. Under Obamacare, since she is 92, her options would be limited even though she is full of life and totally “coherent,” by your standard.
Furthermore, you’re ignoring the fact that government shouldn’t be making these decisions, regardless of who the person is or their condition.
What good is Obamacare insurance when it doesn’t cover health or care? It simply provides end of life counseling so they can kill you and get you off the public system.

Also, u say I am uncaring? What is uncaring? Is it caring to allow someone to lay in rine and feces for the last 10 years of their life? I think so. Is it uncaring to put a 90 year old demented woman under the knife? I think so. I’m not sure how you define uncaring, but I care if a patient is suffering. I even get patients who say they are done with life, and see them going to more surgeries. That my friend is uncaring.
Having a patient with a power of attorney, and a patient saying they wish they could be a DNR, but they can’t make that choice anymore, they SELFISH children who think they mom will live for ever makes the choice now! That is uncaring!
Nate: I didn’t even read your article. I was commenting on other comments. Sorry. I agree, people who are good candidates for surgery by all means should have it. BUT I don’t care how with it you are, 100 years old is not a good candidate for a surgery. That person may go running everyday, anesthesia is still extremely risky. If I did a surgery on that 100 year old patient, I would be sure they sign a waver saying they can not sue me for what happens when they come out of the surgery. THEY WILL know the risk and will release me from liability. Because no matter how coherent you are, 100 years old, nope, bad idea.

I called me appointed representatives in Florida, wrote them emails, sent them faxes stated that I voted for them and want to be represented. I told them I am against The proposed health bill. The only thing I can do beyond that is spread the word. I have done so, at work, at school, via email, via youtube, even on the whitehouse youtube site. So don’t tell me I don’t pay attention to future consequences. I have said at least a dozen times I am not for the current health bill being proposed.

Here is an idea, eliminate nursing homes for patient who can stay home with family. Oh wait, it’s to much of a strain on the family. Family can’t look out for family. Ship them to a nursing home while they are on medicare, and let the taxpayers pay for them to be there for 20-30, heck with a new surgery, 50 years!’

They are constantly talking about how the polls of people in favor of Obama’s health care plan is dropping. Well it is not surprising, I’m sure it’s not because these people are reading the bill, it’s because they are watching the news and the news is against it and show angry people who also have not read the bill, and its scares them.

They almost did it to my father when they said if you don’t fork over 20 grand in doctors bills because you didn’t follow the appropriate route to get diagnosed for pancreatic cancer. Are you kidding me!!! pancreatic cancer has a under 10% survival rate if you wait until there are symptoms…which is what they said. You can’t get tested unless there are symptoms. And they aren’t government.
I have put 10 grand toward my parents deficit from that. I am fully aware. I wonder if it is one of those things where until you live through it then you won’t understand. And by live through, I mean, be a caretaker (doctor, nurse, so on) or a patient.
It is an age old question. Is the doctor worth a million dollars when shehe saves your life and what happens if you don’t have the million dollars?
It is impossible to put a price on a life…but god knows we try.
My brother is a staunch republican which is fine but we were at the hospital for my other brother to have his fist born. (the wife did all the work. lol) But the doctor came in and was talking to everyone and so my elder brother took the chance to pose the current healthcare question to the doctor hoping to make a point to me.
The doctor simply replied. “I became a doctor to help people. That is all I want to do.” and left it at that.
I know people are saying that there will be less specialized doctors and although there is some truth to money hungry doctors who won’t join the field unless they are paid in the millions many are just people helping people.
I mean, what does it say when we boast having the best healthcare professionals but we have the most unhealthy citizens. Diabetes, cancer, and so on.
I was in switzerland last month for work and there were elderly people walking around everywhere. Completely mobile so I looked up thier life expectancy compared to the US.

Anyway, they on average live to be 80 and us to be 78. They do it at roughly at a cost of 3000 dollars per person and we do it at a cost of 7500 per person.
Something is wrong with that number. Break through heart transplant surgery does nothing when only a handful of people can afford it and what about quality of life. Living to be 80 isn’t the point. Quality of life is the point.
When are we going to start measuring with that as a guideline?
I hear you. I’m sure not all, though there may be some, do not want to cost too much for the patient. I am referring to health care professionals. We all want to make a living, but most of us got into health care providing because we hated the way we or our family has been taken care of, and we want to make a difference.

What do you mean there will be less specialized doctors? It’s the specialized doctors who are the ones who get paid the big bucks, and those are the ones who want to get rich. It’s the family practice and internal medicine physicians who get paid the least. We do need specialist because the health of our people seems to get more and more complicated with the various conditions people are afflicted with.
I was told that there has been over the past 10 years or so a big need for family health physicians because there are way too many doctors wanted to specialize in other things.
I think it says a lot about Americans, when we say we have the best health care professionals but rank 37 in actual healthy people. Americans believe that they live, if they want to smoke, they will smoke, if they want to drink, they will drink, if they want to eat like pigs, they will do so. This is a reflection of glutenous American lifestyles, not a reflection of health care professionals.
What we need in order to be healthy here in the US, are health conscious people. We are the big CAPITALIST COUNTRY where that is what is best! We advertise and sell all of the things that kill us literally. But this is our freedom, how dare we even speak against it. This is our culture.
Other countries live with the old culture, the ones of our forefathers. They have no flipping clue what they are saying. They want small government, but they don’t want the life of our forefathers. They simply want to be FREE, free to destroy themselves without assistance. Then when they destroy the country, they will say, well why didn’t government do something about it? I believe this new frenzy in the town halls is a bunch of ill-informed people who feel the need to be a part of something. They see what is on the news and they think, “Maybe I should do this too. I can make a difference in this country by jumping on this bandwagon.”
What they are not doing is really investigating the truth and planning logical things the ask. They are strapped full of emotion, yelling, and making fools of themselves. If you think that yelling and screaming will get you what you want, then you my friend are an idiot.

FoxNews is the only News network that I watch. I don’t need to be a doctor to know what I am talking about. And I could not care less who watches what, changes absolutely no aspect of my life whatsoever. Actually it’s rather sad if people watch TV in order to develop political beliefs.
All television news networks do is try and force it’s views upon others. Democrats and Republicans alike spend all their time trying to force feed people beliefs and tell them how to feel and how to vote. It’s rather disgusting. I subscribe to both liberal and conservative websites just to see how they fill peoples email boxes with articles and messages trying to convince them, join my team, vote this way, feel that way. Rather than simply reporting the news, they try and manipulate weak minded people to further their agenda.

Perhaps, and keep in mind this is just a hypothetical, some people don’t trust a governing body to take care of them? I know, how crazy right with Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security going bankrupt. One more failing government program couldn’t hurt.
Not everyone whines and expects things from their government like you do. Some people have grown-up, moved out of their parent’s basement and got jobs. We call them conservatives. They don’t think the government should provide their health care.

When did you lose all self-reliance that you have to thieve taxes from others to pay for your own end-of-life counseling?
Anyone who does not want government health care should be denied medicare and medicaide. Maybe we can make it so they do not pay into, or receive social security as well. Then we will see how they react when they are old and denied the health care they would receive if they had some sort of medical benefits to pay for it.
Also maybe medicaid and medicare would not be bankrupt if it didn’t pay for treatment that is rediculous to give in the first place. Yet if it denied such treatment them people would cry rationed health care. Make up your mind, do you want to be taken care of or not? If the answer is no, then do not apply for medicare or medicaid! I highly doubt it’s bankrupt for reasons other then the propcedures it pays for, and paying for nursing home care. Nursing homes are expensive. Like I said before, take care of your family like a good conservative should and then medicare would not fail due to paying for your elderly to waste away in nursing homes for so many years.
