National revolt brewing over “cap-and-trade” bill

Many small business owners around the country are sending their complaints loud and clear to capital hill when it comes to the cap-and-tax global warming legislation currently being debate in Senate committees.

Plus, as an added bonus, Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says cap-and-trade will have absolutely no effect whatsoever on greenhouse gas emissions. See below.

Fox News reports:

The revolution will not be televised: it’s been blinking along on a giant bakery sign in St. Louis, Mo., instead.

Fed up with his congressman’s vote on a sweeping climate-change bill that passed the House of Representatives on Saturday, the proprietor of McArthur’s Bakery took to his street sign and posted a clear message to all passersby:

“Russ Carnahan voted to … close us and other … small business.”

David McArthur, vice president of the 52-year-old family operation, a Gateway City institution, is one of a growing number of business owners and taxpayers nationwide who are mobilizing against the so-called cap-and-trade bill, which would levy harsh fines on energy consumption that harms the environment.

McArthur told that every aspect of his business relies on the forms of energy targeted by the American Clean Energy and Security Act, and that his congressman, Carnahan, was supporting “a direct tax increase on small business” by voting for it.

“We make (our product) with electricity, we bake it with gas, we refrigerate and freeze it with electricity and we distribute it with gas and oil,” said McArthur, who said he worries that high prices could cost his company up to $15,000 a year in an industry with a very tight margin for profit.

The legislation requires that the country reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 17 percent by 2020. Big energy plants and producers would have a cap on emissions like carbon dioxide, but could purchase “credits” from other companies that have met their reduction goals. The Obama administration says it will pump hundreds of billions of dollars into the economy.

The Congressional Budget Office has estimated that the plan would have a minimal effect on most taxpayers, costing an average family about 25 cents a day in its first years of implementation.

But the effect on small businesses could be wide-reaching.

“He’s killing small business — he’s killing us,” McArthur said of Carnahan, who was one of a majority of Democrats who voted for the bill in a closely fought 219-212 vote.

McArthur, who penned a scathing letter to Carnahan, is not alone in taking the message directly to his congressman. Dozens of small protests were organized over the weekend at federal buildings and outside the offices of national lawmakers who voted for the bill.

Mike Wilson, who led a protest in Cincinnati of about 100 people on Saturday across from the offices of Rep. Steve Driehaus, D-Ohio, said he was appalled by the 1,500-page legislation, which was fast-tracked by House leaders for a vote Friday. A 310-page amendment was slapped onto the bill Friday morning.

“It was, quite frankly, criminal passing a bill that you didn’t read,” said Wilson, founder of the anti-tax group Cincinnati Tea Party.

The TEA Parties around the country are now beginning to include irritation with the cap-and-trade legislation along with the increasing debt and tax burden we’re already seeing.

Now for the best part, the EPA made a statement in hearing that studies show any form of cap-and-trade will not change greenhouse gas emissions in the United States:

EPA Administrator Jackson confirmed an EPA analysis showing that unilateral U.S. action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions would have no effect on climate. Moreover, when presented with an EPA chart depicting that outcome, Energy Secretary Steven Chu said he disagreed with EPA’s analysis.

“I believe the central parts of the [EPA] chart are that U.S. action alone will not impact world CO2 levels,” Administrator Jackson said.

Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) presented the chart to both Jackson and Secretary Chu, which shows that meaningful emissions reductions cannot occur without aggressive action by China, India, and other developing countries. “I am encouraged that Administrator Jackson agrees that unilateral action by the U.S. will be all cost for no climate gain,” Sen. Inhofe said. “With China and India recently issuing statements of defiant opposition to mandatory emissions controls, acting alone through the job-killing Waxman-Markey bill would impose severe economic burdens on American consumers, businesses, and families, all without any impact on climate.”

China will never come on board and neither will India, they aren’t that stupid to destroy their economies for a total global warming lie.

The bottom line then is that if cap-and-trade passes, it will only be a way to take your wealth in new taxes and fees on your utility bills. Even the EPA admits it will have no positive environmental effect, it is all a scam intended on growing government control and influence in the private sector and placating liberal groups like Greenpeace.

Don’t buy it! Call your Senator and tell them to oppose any form of cap-and-trade and ask them why they are going to raise your utility bills for a hoax.

  • What really eats me up is that many of the things Obama says he wants to do, sound as though he has the best of intentions in mind. The general idea’s the Obama have are not bad. What is bad is that the people he has around him that are writing th legislation are either idiots, or they are as bad as people are saying Obama is.

If Obama was smart he would surround him with people who seem to truly know what they are talking about and we’d be in good shape. That seems to be a problem with other presidents as well. There are smart people out there, why are they not a part of Obama’s administration?

I bet that the people on this site are capable of naming someone who would be good for the various issues that we are facing such as:

    Health Care
    Foreign Policy

I am sure there is at least one person in this country that someone on this site will say is a perfect person to advise Obama on these issues. Why are they not a part of the Obama Administration? What can we do to get them closer to Obama so that he will listen to them? I mean if there is a good answer to that question, I am surely willing to assist in getting it done.

Obama needs to actually speak to an adviser who has a free-market, capitalist mind. He is surrounded by big-government people who believe spending tax dollars solves everything.

He needs to take input from people who believe the individual should be empowered, not the government. Until then, every single piece of legislation coming from Washington will be government-centric and will not solve anything.

Obama needs to think outside the socialist box he’s stuck in.

  • Bill,

$18 million for, that’s obscene. I heard last night that a website with that kind of software to track government expenditures could cost $600,000 to $1 million to implement. $18 million is embarrassing, some web design firm in Maryland just got rich overnight for gouging taxpayers and the stooges in Washington that like to waste money.

  • IN response to the above. Why is government so stupid as to pay so much for a website? I mean really, is it that hard to “not” waste money? Seems to me that the government has the economic knowledge of a expensive jobless wife who constantly spends all of her husbands money on the salon, spa, clothes, and shoes. And we are standing there with our mouth open when we go to balance our checkbook.

Kendale…………..In regard to your 8:32PM post of last night.

President Kennedy surrounded himself with what became to be known as “The Best and the Brightest”.He also was very popular but his brief administration had as many set backs as it did pluses (Bay of Pigs vs SALT treaty for one example).Simply surrounding yourself with intelligent and informed people isn’t the whole answer but ACTING UPON THE PATH THAT IS RIGHT FOR THE COUNTRY AND NOT WHAT IS RIGHT FOR YOURSELF OR WHAT YOUR BOSS WANTS TO HEAR.The perfect example of this is the logic that was given to continue the war in Vietnam. Now what ever you heard or believe about that era in our history many factors were taken into account besides the ones listed below but these were the two most commen. The two that had the most effect was the logic is we have to continue or we will lose respect in our foreign policies(or the people we lost will be in vain).Another one was the body count that was trumped up in it’s reports to President Johnson(he had many of the same people JFK had held over to his administration)by numerous departments. When Clark Clifford took over as Secretary of Defense he asked “What is our goal in the war?” they had no answer. Why were these tactics taken? IT ALL CAN BE COVERED BY MY 4 POINTS I GAVE IN A PREVIOUS POST ON POLITICIANS.(Cover your a**,Justify your existance, the people work for you, power means re-election)

President Reagan had some very intelligent people on his administration also but still got into trouble by some rogue in the Iran-Contra affair.

President Obama seems to be letting Congress (Speaker Pelosi and Leader Reid) do much of the work on drawing up these bills and thats one reason he is catching flack.Although I truly feel President Obama is OBSESSED with the idea that is prevalent through history of GETTING AS MUCH THROUGH CONGRESS YOUR FIRST YEAR IN OFFICE.Don’t worry about the details (such as how it’s going to be paid) because once through THEY ARE SELDOM REPEALED.This policy was followed by FDR and LBJ both of who President Obama holds in high regard.

There you have it……..history repeating itself!

  • Very Sad. Am I wrong for wishing the leaders in government were a bit better at their jobs, and by that I mean serving the people, not themselves or those they serve behind the scenes?

Insurance companies, drug companies — they’ll get a seat at the table, they just won’t be able to buy every chair. But what we will do is, we’ll have the negotiations televised on C-SPAN, so that people can see who is making arguments on behalf of their constituents, and who are making arguments on behalf of the drug companies or the insurance companies. And so, that approach, I think is what is going to allow people to stay involved in this process.”

Law that states that’s police can investigate and turn over illegal immigrants to immigration is being weakened. Now Obama administration is saying to only do this in so called serious crimes, not smaller ones. I say anyway to spot and deport someone who is here illegally, go for it.

If someone is not willing to be here legally, they don’t need to be here at all, ESPECIALLY if they are committing crimes.

  • Obama rethinks health care

O.k this starts off sounding like Obama wants to ONLY pay Doctors for making actual improvements in the health of patients and not for simply seeing patients. Then towards the end it sounds like they are saying Doctors will still get paid for seeing patients but get BONUS’s for actual improvements made.

As long as it is the latter, I am fine with that because making actual improvements in health is NOT something a doctor can do without patient compliance. I am all for giving bonus’s to physicians who actually make a change in patients health, keeping them healthy, and preventing unnecessary illness. If you add this to decreased insurance premiums for patients who are making a change in themselves, or simply staying healthy from the state, we’d be onto something here.

If patients and physicians are working together to keep the US healthy and prevent clogging the health care system with people who are unhealthy by choice, this would sound ideal.

If this little news clip is the beginning of taking money away from physicians if their patients are not improving, then we are well on our way to health care DOOM. If Americans want to smoke tobacco, drink excessive alcohol, eat McDonald’s everyday and destroy themselves, that is their business, but don’t destroy health care along with yourselves.

This has always been my beef with people who live unhealthy lifestyles and thus add to the problem we have with expensive health care and insurance. I understand that we are America the Free, but sometimes freedoms end up hurting everyone else around those who make bad choices with their freedom.

  • Obama faces a new push to look back.

Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona, said on “Meet the Press” on NBC that despite his dismay at the Central Intelligence Agency’s past interrogation methods, including waterboarding, he opposed a criminal inquiry into torture, which he said would “harm our image throughout the world.”

I am thinking the opposite. Wouldn’t it strengthen our image in the eyes of the world if we investigate ourselves and prosecute those of us that have committed crimes against other nations? Would it not show the world that we are a “changing” US, that we will no longer commit such crimes and that if we find someone amongst us that does, we will prosecute them?

“Mr. Obama has been eager not to put himself at odds with the military and intelligence agencies. He visited C.I.A. headquarters early in his presidency and blocked the release of photographs of prisoner abuse, saying they could inflame people in Iraq and Afghanistan and endanger American troops.”

Sure this is a possibility. But if with these the President also speaks out against such crimes, this will not simply be a display of how the US “tortured people in 2004” and will be a display of how the new administration will not stand for such acts. If law enforcement is simply criminals being sought after by those being criminals, is that what we really want? What would the founders of this nation do?

  • So Justice Ginsburg says that thew Connecticut test was bad because it had a writing section and writing and firefighting do not go hand in hand? That is was unfair to blacks to have a writing section on the promotion test? Holy thatscompletebul Batman!

Now she is already a supreme court justice? Now that is just wrong. This is the first time I have seen the truth in that horrible way we choose supreme court justices. I am all for diversity and justice being brought to this country on the behalf of minorities as we have created such a controversial playground with our history. I am NOT for turn the majority into the minority and outcasting them.

If we had not had slavery, and if this country had NOT treated non-whites so poorly, we would not be in this position today. Now how do we fix this problem? Will we always have racial and cultural issues on such a grand stage? Until all races and cultures in the US simply love one another the way a “Christian Nation” should, the answer is YES, we will always have this problem.

  • California spends $5.6billion on illegals? and they want money from the government because they need some 24billion? psssh

You spend money on health care, education, ect on illegals, that is your own problem. Rid yourself of the illegal through laws such as the one that I commented on above, and you wont find yourself in such financial problems.

The whole, illegals coming over, dumping new borns, and we flip the bill is outrageous as well. I say deport parents and new born, as this is obvious a plot illegals use to get here. How can we allow ourselves to be raped financially by people who are committing sch a crime (Coming here when you know you’re pregnant, knowingly having the baby here to try and get citizenship). I am compassionate towards all people, but when you do such a thing to us financially with no intentions on paying taxes and being productive citizens, I say GO HOME!

The ‘Cap And Tax’ Dead End
    By Sarah Palin
    Tuesday, July 14, 2009

Welp, Sarah Palin comes out today to repeat things that have already been all over the news and the internet. I suppose she has to start somewhere, eh? Is this what she plans to do now? Become a political commentator? That’s just what we need, another Ann Coulter.

  • in response to Palin’s article…

    “willwilsn wrote:
What cap-and-trade does is eliminate the subsidy on fossil fuels. Future costs — economic problems due to climate change — aren’t borne by fossil fuel extractors, thus aren’t folded into the costs consumers pay. Cap-and-trade creates a currency that has no intrinsic value at this point in time, but that value will increase with time, as long as no more credits are allotted, as emission rights become a limiting resource (the cap). The cap is important: the whole point of the system is to fold future costs of burning fossil fuels into present costs, get our carbon emissions under control, and hopefully mitigating the economic costs of climate change. Certainly there are deniers reading this comment, so I refer you to some science I’ve posted on my site,

” A tenured faculty position, with its academic freedom, represents a wonderful opportunity to change directions, study different things, and make new contributions. Of course, I still have no funding for my new studies either, but I’m doing what I can with the $300/year Duke provides my research program.”

I would like to check his sources. For some reason I can not find them in these links. He has PHD. so must be my error in not finding.

$300 research from Duke says a lot about this man. In his place I would have omitted that fact if he wrote it.

He mentions ( I don’t meaning in depth either) nuclear cooling caused by dust. I dare say volcanic eruptions have cooled earth more and is not mention.

I did not notice 7 year cycle of Sun, ice found thicker at poles, ocean cooler last 10 years, or anything on ozone layers.

I may have missed some things I say is not there, that is. However his lack of links to back his statistics really brought little credibility to him in my eyes.

I respect him less than Al Gore if that is possible. At a Congressional hearing Al was talking. A Congress showed graph of Al’s home carbon print. Was not good.

President Bush home in Texas had low carbon print and was what Al house should have been. President Bush added many environmental things to White House, though not as Public as Obama has recently.

If one studies the geology of earth, she has undergone many changes Africa, for instance, has gone from full jungle and near none long before man. Glacier have expanded and recede long before mankind.

Meteors and volcanoes have thrown dust into the air causing climate changes world wide as well as causing distinction of Hugh numbers of living species.

I know that in poles ice cores are taken. In it, carbon levels can give historic records from the past. I have never seen that information used to support global warming or new term global change. There is reason warming was changed. If those cored supported, it would be limelighted on regular bases.

Years ago it was blasted by new there was hole in ozone. I went to work at health department and mentioned to big shot in air control wishing to impress. They laughed in m face. I learned new satilight just went up. That old one did not measure zero ozone. So zero could be a norm and not recent.

My point being many unknown factors. Many know facts ignored. To say

“What cap-and-trade does is eliminate the subsidy on fossil fuels. Future costs — economic problems due to climate change — are not’t borne by fossil fuel extractors, thus are not’t folded into the costs consumers pay”

    is bull.

I will run my comment though check spelling. I will not organize it better. Frankly, this subject matter bores me. And Bill Wilson bores me more than Al Gore.

And Al I hate. He was shamed into lowering his energy usage at home. He fly around in personal jet.He claimed he would not profit from his ecological quest, which is lie…

If co2 is a worry, which I am not saying it is at all, plant marry jane instead of trees. One acre of this grass will produce more oxygen than one acres of trees. Plus you can make paper, shoes, clothes, etc from grass. And they have plants that are no good for getting high.

Bill Gates may become 1st $ gazillionaire because of alternative energy. He invested heavily in this many decades ago.Hydrogen does pollute. Not from exhaust of car because that is clean drinking water. But from the manufacture of that fuel. Some day soon a windmill may produce hydrogen with no pollution. My point being, Industrial revolution occurred when knowledge and practicality meet. Same hold true for tech. age. Same will hold for alternative energy.

False price tag on oil and coal.False fuel additive from kernel corn. Mocks real alternative energy. When technology matches the energy, then success.

I have been trying to find the TRUE CAP AND TRADE REASON. Trying to follow the money trail. Could this be it…

“Cap and trade, in other words, is a scheme to redistribute income and wealth — but in a very curious way. It takes from the working class and gives to the affluent; takes from Miami, Ohio, and gives to Miami, Florida; and takes from an industrial America that is already struggling and gives to rich Silicon Valley and Wall Street “green tech” investors who know how to leverage the political class”

  • Bill O’Reilly state the facts that you give with your post Bill.

It’s rather disturbing. I will surely be calling my representative to trash this horrible piece of garbage legislation.

  • Bill Hedges

I did not catch Bill last few days. This Man has geeat first name though.

Anyone living in older home, may never be able to sell if this is passed

I am not a building regulation expert, but this seems to be new.. Forcing undo hardship. Can a owner of 50-100 year old home afford to update with this new standard if they wish to sell. I think not. Unless rich.

  • I totally agree. Here in St. Petersburg, Florida, there are tons of old homes, I can not imagine how much it would cost to modernize them all under the cap and trade legislation. People who buy homes simply to rent them and make money would likely end up having to sell because they could not afford to do the renovations on them all.

  • Bill Hedges

Answer is foreclosure if financially only way. Then who buys from bank. may be loss cause to bank ??? Did anybody think this through ??? Only real answer is stop bill. Inflation is coming. Poor can’t buy cheap upgraded home. Can’t afford recently bought upgraded rental. owners of rental of couse raise rent, even without improvements. Someday they will want to sell. How stupid are they suppose to be…

Write offs helps. But don’t pay for cost. Will pay for self over years. Can hope for cost raise property value. Hope they don’t have to sell for new job or loss job.

  • I hear ya Bill.

I am dumbfounded by the fact that there are still people running around celebrating Obama, even still, after the announcement of cap and trade, and socialized medicine. I don’t get it. I suppose the masses are blind and/or ignorant.
