Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to resign as of July 25th

This story is now a couple days old but I’m see the discussion still lives on. I was away over the weekend so here’s to playing a little catch up.

MyWay reports:

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) – Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin didn’t wait long to give some hint of what her political life might look like after she leaves office at the end of the month.

After staying out of the public eye for most of Saturday, a day after abruptly announcing she would soon give up her job as governor, Palin indicated on a social networking site that she would take on a larger, national role, citing a “higher calling” to unite the country along conservative lines.

“I am now looking ahead and how we can advance this country together with our values of less government intervention, greater energy independence, stronger national security, and much-needed fiscal restraint,” the former Republican vice presidential candidate wrote in a posting on her Facebook page. Palin’s spokeswoman, Meghan Stapleton, confirmed Palin wrote the entry.

Palin shocked even her closest friends on Friday when she announced she would resign July 26, more than a year before her first term ends. But the controversial hockey mom has not revealed many details of bigger plans and national agenda.

Palin instead cast herself as a victim and blasted the media, calling the response to her announcement “predictable” and out of touch.

“How sad that Washington and the media will never understand; it’s about country,” the statement said. “And though it’s honorable for countless others to leave their positions for a higher calling and without finishing a term, of course we know by now, for some reason a different standard applies for the decisions I make.”

The abruptness of her announcement and the mystery surrounding her plans have fed widespread speculation. But Palin attorney Thomas Van Flein on Saturday warned legal action may be taken against bloggers and publications that reprint what he calls fraudulent claims.

“To the extent several websites, most notably liberal Alaska blogger Shannyn Moore, are now claiming as ‘fact’ that Governor Palin resigned because she is ‘under federal investigation’ for embezzlement or other criminal wrongdoing, we will be exploring legal options this week to address such defamation,” Van Flein said in a statement. “This is to provide notice to Ms. Moore, and those who re-publish the defamation, such as Huffington Post, MSNBC, the New York Times and The Washington Post, that the Palins will not allow them to propagate defamatory material without answering to this in a court of law.”

He also told the Anchorage Daily News that Palin wasn’t in any criminal legal jeopardy.

The rumors of legal trouble or FBI investigations are totally false, it’s nonsense.

The truth in this matter is really yet to be revealed, we don’t know where Sarah Palin is headed next nor what her future political plans may be.

Video of her statement:

People are speculating in all directions as to what this means for her political career, either good or bad.

She’s clearly a fund raising powerhouse and I would caution anyone in underestimating her ability to connect with people or her political ambitions. She will be a positive political force for conservatism moving forward, we just don’t know in what capacity that will be yet.

  1. “I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities,”
    Sarah Palin

Michel Martin posed the question: Has Sarah Palin just become a community organizer?

Gotta feel bad for Alaska when their governor abandons them with less than a month’s notice and without explanation. I wonder what higher calling she has above governorship. It’s hard not to believe this is a scandal waiting to break. Governors don’t generally step down without a lengthy and memorable explanation.

  2. Bones,

I am quite exciting to hear what the scandal is. :)

Not that it matters much, but I believe it is usually scandal that leads a public official to resign so abruptly. Hopefully it is not a blow to the ego of some conservatives, rather she is moving on to something truly meaningful to the people of the US, or at least Alaska.

  3. Abandon her state? No so. The fear of Sarah that took the liberal media to new heights of dishonesty and lynch tactics against her has cost the state of Alaska over $2 million and counting. The damage done to the innocent victims – her children – should be recoupable by law, and I hope she sues the media blind. As a private citizen she can. As she said, King Obama resigned as a junior no name senator to run for an office he isn’t qualified to monitor a class in, much less hold. But when Sarah resigns for valid reasons and the best interest of her family and her state, she’s ridiculed – as usual.

The same vultures will eventually turn on obama and perhaps attack his daughters the way they have Sarah’s. And I can’t wait to watch the show.

  5. I guess Michel Martin was dreaming because Sarah was not elected mayor of a town.

Obama disappointed Il. by not focusing on Il. as Senator.
    Reasons he is running…

“Obama told the crowd he would tackle problems like poor schools, economic hardships and oil dependence, saying a “failure of leadership” is to blame for not meeting the nation’s challenges. He also implored the crowd to demand that there be “universal health care in America by the end of the president’s first term”

Yes Kendale, Obama was talking about health care back in 2007.

“He called the Iraq war a “tragic mistake” and said, “It’s time to admit that no amount of American lives can resolve the political disagreement that lies at the heart of someone else’s civil war. That’s why I have a plan that will bring our combat troops home by March of 2008.

His plan didn’t work..His idea seem wrong.

I could have swore Nate gave video of Sarah. Didn’t she give reasons ? My sound is not working. I have read her reasons.
    ……….

So many funny things have been said about Sarah and her children. I have been told here I am funny. I have come up with a top ten, a play off of David Letterman. Title is “Top ten things Obama and his wife did and said when they saw flag on oldest daughter’s face on fouth of July.”

De·co·rum prevents my posting it. Perhaps others will develop good taste as well.

  6. I never heard of Michel Martin before reading bones comment. His quote interested me. I found her interesting. Somewhat on fair side.

“Like everybody else interested in politics, I am dying to know what Palin does next. But I particularly want to know if her time in the hot seat has left her with any more compassion than she has demonstrated to this point about how hard it can be for so many other people to put a life together. And even more important, I’d like to know what ideas she has about how to make things better for the next Sarah Palin”

I did not see the outrage of women groups not supporting Sarah in this article.

“Here’s what Kelly says near the end of the segment, after dismissing the panelists: One final word for our viewers: Sarah Palin has every right to be offended and upset about these baseless claims and, once again, the FBI has come out and said they’re baseless. But she will not win in a lawsuit, unless it is CLEAR, CLEAR (her emphasis) that the statements were made with actual malice, which means the blogger knew they were false or something very close to knowing they were false, they’re not actionable… Having said all that, Palin was right to make the threat of a defamation lawsuit.”

  9. Obviously like everyone else I was stunned by the annoucement.Looking back on it however I think it not only was the best choice politically but personally.

Heres why I feel that way.Being Governor of Alaska while no small job leaves you about as far away from the national scene as you can get. In fact of the 100 Senators and 50 Governors Alaska is about the least in the pulse of national politics and thus prepared of any of them.Next the water boarding the MSM has put her thru since this time last year is tremendous. She had 15 ethnic charges brought against her and everyone was found to have no validity. Why you ask were these brought ? To keep her occupied with something else than concentrating on politics. The left fears her(more on that later) and will do anything to tear her down including attack Trig and Bristol.(wheres the EMPATHY NOW members of the left?)Not only was she fighting the liberal left but the right. The staff of John Mc Cains presidential team went to no ends attempting to slide the blame of his loss onto her.Going against these forces she was just preaching to the chorus (she needed new converts)along with being the constant target of late night host she could never recover from 2008 in order to mount a sucessful 2012 presidential campaign.

My opinion considering the timing and manner of the announcement is she just wants her life back.Announcing on a Friday of a holiday weekend isn’t going to enhance your career and enable you to take the next step on the national scene. You would want all the fanfare you can get.

As for the future …..it’s still open but if she comes back with an eye on Washington I suggest she run for the Senate where she can get on committees and the national merry-go round. Because in my view she wasn’t ready for a prime time presidential run as Governor. She has a large following OUTSIDE ALASKA who not only respect her views but like her warmth and personality. What she needs is depth for those views which being in Washington would provide.I had the pleasure of talking with Todd Palin and I wish her and her family all the best and will continue to look forward to her views.

The GOP meanwhile will go with THE NEXT IN LINE AS THEY ALWAYS DO meaning it’s Mitt Romney’s nomination to lose in 2012.

  10. One last thought here because I know someone will bring this up.

It will probably be said she can’t be any more unprepared than President Obama was to run for office. My thoughts on that is we aren’t COMPARING PEOPLE HERE BUT LOOKING FOR THE MOST QUALIFIED.I don’t believe in the arguement of comparing President Obama to Bush because I think we have slipped down the slope enough in Presidential politics where we are willing to be satisfied with the least of two evils and we should look for an INDIVIDUALS excellance.I try not to base my opinion in my post on comparing apples and oranges but on an individuals traits and accomplishments with my beliefs thus any comparison is moot.History will not compare each administration but judge them on their own accomplishments.

  12. What’s Next for Sarah Palin?

    http://www.humanevents.co.....p?id=32582

“Along with giving a boost to her close political ally and Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell, Palin’s exodus from the governorship later this month gives her an opportunity to put aside her most immediate problem: debts.

One source who is close to Palin and her team (and requested anonymity) told me that “Gov. Palin has about $500,000 in legal debts from fighting these ethics charges her enemies started in Alaska. ”

“She should have at least stayed until 2010 and finished the job,” a former Republican state legislator told me, “People don’t respect someone who they voted into a job who suddenly walks away from it.”

“If this is about running for President, it’s about as odd a way as we’ve ever seen,” echoed John Weaver, a onetime strategist for John McCain.”

“When Rockefeller left the statehouse in Albany, he had think tanks, his special commission, and a crack political team at his finger tips. Ronald Reagan had similar operations when stepped down as governor of California after two terms in 1974. Palin has none of the above. Is it really possible she can assemble this apparatus in time to run in 2012? ”

“Like Nixon and Clinton, Sarah Palin has youth and time on her side. She could easily skip the 2012 race, focus on getting her enhancing her finances and campaigning for others, and make a national bid in 2016 or 2020. Along the way, Palin could take out Alaska’s Democratic Sen. Mark Begich in 2014, thus restoring her to office and burnishing her resume. “

  13. This is clear to anyone who has a clear head. Sarah has stepped down for a couple reasons. She has been taking a hard time and it has been hard on her family and bank account. The interesting part is that most over look what is really going on. She is looking to become the underdog and draw in the “stop picking on poor sarah” attitudes. This new attitude toward her will help her to be accepted as she starts moving back into the public view and on her way to running for president. Its all a plan. Most likely a smart one due to the fact that most will not even realize or believe it…….

That sounds like a bunch of useless whining to me.

Joke about special Olympics means you can’t be president?

If Tony Blair does not have a dvd player that plays PAL and NTSC then that mean he can not afford a $30 dvd player from walmart, as that is where I got mine and it plays all regional formats. (Phillips by the way is the maker)

Why on earth would a voter care about the president giving the Queen an iPOD? I mean who cares?

It’s bad to bow to the King of Saudi? Sounds like someone showing respect for someone else’s culture to me.

Obama made reference to a non existent language, fire that guy right now! That’s far worse than saying God told you what decisions to make for America. :)

    ok enough.

The national debt thing is bad. Although I seen many more people in the streets of my county here in Florida protesting the War in Iraq than I have seen protesting Stimulus Packages. (The latter I have seen none)

It would have been a better link of all the points had to do with policy signing.

“Mrs Brown may have two boys but she certainly knows the way to a little girl’s heart. These were gifts chosen in the true spirit of present-giving: to please the recipient, not the giver.”

“In return Mrs Obama gave the Brown children, Fraser and John, two toy models of Marine One, the Presidential helicopter. Fair enough on the helicopter part, always a popular choice with small boys; but Marine One? It’s not as though anyone needs reminding that Barack Obama is President or that he has his own helicopter. Short of giving the boys Action Man models of her own husband smiting the evil forces of neoconservatism, Mrs Obama’s gesture could not have been more solipsistic or more inherently dismissive of Mrs Brown.”
