Rep. Murtha: Western PA is “racist,” but Obama will win

In a brazen backhanded slap to his home state and his home district in Pennsylvania, Democratic Representative John Murtha told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette today that Western Pennsylvania is definitively “racist,” but says Obama will do well there anyway once people warm up to him.

Report from Yahoo News:

PITTSBURGH – U.S. Rep. John Murtha says his home base of western Pennsylvania is racist and that could reduce Barack Obama’s victory margin in the state by 4 percentage points.

The 17-term Democratic congressman tells the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in a story posted Wednesday on its Web site that, as he put it: “There is no question that western Pennsylvania is a racist area.”

He says it’s taken time for many Pennsylvania voters to come around to liking Obama, but he should still win the state, though not in a runaway.

In a separate interview posted Wednesday on the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review’s Web site, Murtha says Obama has a problem with the race issue in western Pennsylvania that could shave 4 points off his lead in the state.

Are we to take this as a setup should Obama lose the state of Pennsylvania? I doubt it since Murtha has a history of making statements first, and asking questions later.

I think I’d be asking Murtha for a followup on that comment..

  • According to Obama is pretty solid in the polls in Pennsylvania, so for Murtha to come out with a statement like this pretty ridiculous.

Anyone else think that politicians should be put into retirement once they reach their sell-by date?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Murtha one of the kings of pork? He has a vested interest in McCain NOT reaching the White House.

He’s also stupid enough to believe what he said. And Obama will let his “white friends” pull the race card for him. PA wasn’t too happy about being tagged as bitter for clinging to guns and religon, wonder how they’ll take knowing now they’re racists.

Babs you would be engaging in a little guilt-by-association would you?

    No I didn’t think so.

To suggest an area is a bit racist is insulting and unnecessary yes, but like, wouldn’t he know? I originally come from a country town in semi-outback Australia, and it was racist, I know because I lived there.

I agree Murtha shouldn’t have said anything, at best it was counter-productive, at worst inflammatory – that doesn’t mean he was wrong though.

As a resident of Western PA, I can say that people here don’t like B.S. Pittsburgh is more of a Midwestern town than East Coast city like Philadelphia. Since Obama leads the league in B.S. and Midwesterners value a straight-shooter, McCain will likely do better in Western PA. However, given Philly’s propensity to lean more left and larger its population, Obama may still win PA.

For the life of me I don’t see why “You Decide 2008” thinks there’s a story in this. One of my neighbors who is from the Johnstown, PA area just came back from spending the whole summer there, and I heard straight from her how dismayed she was to find that it still remains an extremely racist area. Murtha just told it like it is. Period.

At first I was very optimistic that the USA was at long last ready to vote for a black man for president if he was the best candidate. By now, I see how deluded I was, this election has painfully revealed that are too still a surprising number of citizens who are still intolerant biggots. I hope that we are a better country than that as a whole, and that the overwhelming majority of the voters will vote for the candidate that they truly believe will be the best to lead our country out of the tough situation that we are in, and race should play no part in that decision.

  • Stalin

Thanks Murtha. Your paranoia set in by senility is helping McCain. Keep it up. Obama doesn’t have the sack to attack McCain to his face, so he has his surrogates do it for him. Can you imagine Obama meeting Putin? Putin will make him pee his pants.

  • Babs

John Moody, a VP at Fox News, is also a resident of PA. Here’s his message to Murtha.

I’d say “go to hell” covers it pretty well.

  • Stalin you make no sense. If Obama would pee his pants when meeting Putin, then what does that say about McCain, when Obama just laughs at him with all his gibberish angry ranting. I think it’s McCain who’d have the senior moment and end up wearing a Larry King diaper.

  • susan

Need not worry all,BO will win this election,Ask SP it is from the Gods!

  • Babs

pudding, you make no sense. McCain has already met Putin, he’s been around the international circuit many years more than Obama, remember?

  • susan

So has BO you morans, and they like him

  • Babs

Yes, Susan, they certainly do like him. Let your narrow mind ask itself why. The same reason Hamas does, perhaps?

PS – “moron” is the correct spelling. If you’re going to name call, at least spell it right.

  • Deb

Why is it that everyone who doesn’t want Obama to win is a racist? How about a vote for McCain because he has a female running mate. To me it is all about character and honesty. So I chose the side that I feel has the most because there are issues with both of them.

If Colon Powell was running I would be the first in line to vote for him. It has nothing to do with the color of skin. As far as I can see Obama has used the race card even with the Clintons’, and more so than anyone else in this campaign. How about if we forget about the color of the skin and vote because you believe in the person and what they will do for the country? Besides once either of them gets to the White House they will forget all the promises they made and will do what they want. Or in Obama’s case it will be whatever Pelosi and Reid want.

  • Bill Hedges

Deb– Yes I agree. There are nuts for McCain as well. RacIst by some is used for reason to vote for Obama. This week reasons are racist and peeing. Next week something else. I agree about Powell. I wanted him as Presdent also. I admire him…

  • Bill Hedges

Deb– Powell will be on MEET THE PRESS Sunday. He has a announcement !!!!! ?
