McCain releases 1,100 pages of medical records (Update) Healthy

Over the Memorial Day weekend, while he’s hosting potential VP candidates, McCain will be releasing about 400 pages of medical records for review by select reporters.

Story from the washington Times:

As Americans kick off the first holiday weekend of the summer Friday, Sen. John McCain will release 400 pages of his medical records to a handpicked group of reporters who can neither photocopy nor keep the documents, illustrating the sensitivity the campaign places on the 71-year-old candidate’s age and health.

The health of the certain Republican nominee, who bears large scars on his face and neck from surgery in 2000 to remove an invasive form of skin cancer, has been a question throughout the early part of the presidential campaign. For more than a year, Mr. McCain has repeatedly promised to release his recent medical records, but has yet to do so.

The McCain campaign has selected a handful of news organizations to review the records in a conference room at the Copper Wind Resort in Phoenix, near the Mayo Clinic Scottsdale. Reporters from all five major networks —CBS, ABC, NBC, CNN and Fox—will be allowed to take notes from the records, as will wire reporters from the Associated Press, Reuters and Bloomberg news agencies. Just two print newspapers will be among the pool: The Washington Post and the Arizona Republic.

McCain campaign officials said Wednesday that the high level of interest in the records meant they had to limit access by reporters.

“We had to do it at the Mayo Clinic and the doctors there probably didn’t want 200 reporters running around,” said senior McCain adviser Charlie Black. “It’s not a perfect situation, but its the best available.” No independent doctors will be allowed to examine the records, although McCain officials said Thursday that most networks are flying in their medical correspondents, some of whom are doctors.

Content speculation, suppose there will be any major headlines out of this come next week? Maybe a few things, but we probably already know quite a bit.

The records are out and McCain’s got a fairly clean bill of health.

Here’s a video report on it from the Associated Press:

The details from Yahoo News:

FOUNTAIN HILLS, Ariz. – Three-time melanoma survivor John McCain appears cancer-free, has a strong heart and is in otherwise general good health, according to eight years of medical records reviewed by The Associated Press.

The Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting remains at risk for developing new skin cancers, and gets a thorough check by a Mayo Clinic dermatologist every few months.

Like many aging Americans, McCain takes medicine to keep his cholesterol in check.

But Mayo internist Dr. John Eckstein, his longtime personal physician, lauded McCain’s performance on a heart stress test sweating it out for 10 minutes when Eckstein routinely sees patients decades younger quit at five or seven minutes.

“I think physiologically he is considerably younger than his chronologic age based on his cardiovascular fitness,” Eckstein said in an interview Thursday. “I got a call from the cardiologist who said that he had not seen anyone that age exercise for that long in a long time.”

McCain’s most recent exams show a range of health issues common in aging: He frequently has precancerous skin lesions removed, and in February had an early stage squamous cell carcinoma, an easily cured skin cancer, removed. He had benign colon growths called polyps taken out during a routine colonoscopy in March.

The Vietnam veteran has degenerative arthritis from war injuries that might mean a future joint replacement. His blood pressure and weight were healthy, and his cholesterol good but not optimal and he switched medication from the controversial Vytorin that made headlines this past winter to a proven standby, simvastatin.

Nothing new really, just that he has normal health issues anyone his age would have. Overall, though, he’s in good health and is getting good care.

The media didn’t waste any time, Nate, the reports are out, and I think the media is probably disappointed. McCain tests below his chronological age, and is basically fit as a fiddle. 🙂

  • Stalin

That’s pretty impressive for someone who was beaten to within an inch of his life for 5 years.

Yeah, and then faced Ellen Degeneres. *L* I like the new stress testing that sets aside your chronological age for physical age. It’s a truer picture.

A full 10 minutes on the treadmill, the doctor’s were impressed saying many people half his age can’t go that long. Wonder how long the smokers lungs of Obama could go, or if he’s going to submit medical reports? Its a fair question to ask, with all that’s been made of McCain’s age and cancer history, isn’t it? Also, Obama has a much greater risk of high blood pressure and stroke simply because he’s African American. Is it fair to question that? Does he suffer from high blood pressure now? Is he on medication?

God forbid.1.100 pages.I love Heroes. This man must be resurrecting.Eventhough he walks like there are some bended iron forced in his ankles.I cannot immagine if he cannot clap 10 times withought saying ‘Oh my God’.Like Obama can do.
Babs did you watch Ellens show when MacCain was asked about Gays?I do not believe we are taught how to laugh or smile in school but he was guiltily smiling but could not look into his element to fall on the presenter.
Babs do not worry, the last time Obama came to Africa we blended him against all odds. You can begin to immagine the concoctions that that he chewed. We made him dance Bikutsi with bare foot on red charcaol with some of the oldest gorrila’s and pigmies in the most dense forests in central Africa.
Don’t you know why the Clintons are so annoyed with African? We were brothers but they betrayed us.We circumcised the moroon here and he won the White House but never came back to say ‘Thank You’.Karma rewarded him.Its finished with them. They will never see the White House.
