Obama picks up 9 superdelegates, union endorsement

In a short span of a couple months, Obama has taken the superdelegate count and tied it up with Hillary Clinton. Earlier today, he added 9 more to the list to become even with Clinton.

The report on it from Yahoo News:

WASHINGTON – Barack Obama all but erased Hillary Rodham Clinton’s once-imposing lead among national convention superdelegates on Friday and won fresh labor backing as elements of the Democratic Party began coalescing around the Illinois senator for the fall campaign.

Obama picked up the backing of nine superdelegates, including Rep. Donald Payne of New Jersey, a member of the Congressional Black Caucus who had been a Clinton supporter.

In addition, the American Federation of Government Employees announced its support for Obama. The union claims about 600,000 members who work in the federal and Washington, D.C., governments.

Obama, who won a convincing victory in the North Carolina primary and lost Indiana narrowly on Tuesday, has been steadily gaining strength in the days since.

Clinton also gained a superdelegate.

The developments left the former first lady with 271.5 superdelegates, to 271 for Obama. Little more than four months ago, on the eve of the primary season, she held a lead of 169-63.

Superdelegates are party leaders who attend the convention delegates by virtue of their positions, and are not selected in primaries and caucuses.

In addition to Payne, Reps. Peter DeFazio of Oregon and Mazie Hirono of Hawaii, two members of the Democratic National Committee from California and a party official in South Carolina announced they were supporting Obama. Superdelegates from New Mexico and Virginia also joined the migration.

So, too, John Gage, president of the AFGE.

A video report from ABC News:

If the superdelegates continue leaning toward Obama, Clinton might not even have the option of trying to win using the superdelegate card. We’ll see how this plays out but it appears as though more and more will be committing to Obama as it’s clear he’s clenching the nomination.

And Hillary realizes too late that the deck is stacked against her. Sure, the superdelegates are rife with working whites, but unfortunately for her, every one of them has attended college!!

Damn the elitist DNC and it’s educational values!!! How can she win if her base has no representation among the supers?! I’ll bet there are a handful of blacks among the superdelegates, but not an uneducated white among the lot of ’em. It’s a rigged game!!

Edward Espinoza, a superdelegate who declared for Obama yesterday, has long kept a blog which was anonymous until a few days ago (www.mrsuper.org). Today he’s speculating that the race may be over even before May 20th. He’s thinking that Hillary may just be waiting for her inevitable landslide victory in WV, so that she can bow out on a victorious note and on her own terms.

Who knows if he’s right, but it’s an interesting notion. According to him, most superdelegates would really like to get this all settled before memorial day so they can enjoy their vacations in peace.
