Live MSNBC Republican debate chat tonight @ 9pm

Share/Bookmark

We will be conducting somewhat of an experiment tonight holding a live chat during the MSNBC Republican debate at 9pm eastern. Around 8pm the link to the chat will be available for all to join. Come discuss the debate and monitor Fred Thompson’s first appearance.

Here’s a little preview:

WASHINGTON – Fred Thompson, a veteran actor but a newcomer to presidential politics, steps onto a debate stage Tuesday for the first time in a decade.

He’s been practicing for weeks.

Although nine Republicans will take part in the forum, which begins at 4 p.m. EDT in Dearborn, Mich., the focus will be on Thompson, a former Tennessee senator.

A late entry into the race, Thompson has sometimes struggled to answer questions on the campaign trail in his initial weeks as a full-fledged candidate.

He’s no stranger to the small screen. He spent years acting on NBC’s “Law & Order.” But the last time he engaged in a political debate was 1996 during his successful Senate re-election campaign.

Over the past two weeks, Thompson has held seven to nine debate sessions at his McLean, Va., campaign headquarters outside Washington, aides say. In each session, Thompson would answer timed questions on a variety of subjects. Aides then would stop and review answers with him.

Practicing he may be but is he ready for prime time against his colleagues who’ve been debating for months already?

We will find out tonight.

The debate will be broadcast live at 4pm on CNBC and replayed at 9pm on MSNBC. We will be live chatting during the MSNBC broadcast.

See you then.

  1. Why is Ralph Nader excluded from the debates? He’s the only candidate against this communist move to send 700,000,000,000 tax payer dollars to corporate fat cats who are destroying are economy. What is going on. Are these debates rigged or something. Naders at 5% in the national polls. That’s impressive considering he’s been ignored by the wall street owned media.

  2. Nader warned about greed and deregulation for years. He should be in the debate. Nader is more relevant after this financial meltdown than either of the other corporate owned and controlled candidates. Nader should be included!

  3. Nader should be included in these debates. Who else is going to talk about cutting the huge wasteful military budget, getting out of iraq in six months which would include getting corporations out, etc. This is a democracy and a democracy needs more voice and choices. LET NADER DEBATE!!!!!!!!

  4. The voters are the losers in the debate. What happened to DEMOCRACY? This is a historic election, a woman, a black man and the oldest candidate ever. Why not make history including third party candidates providing an opportunity for voters to hear the voices of all Presidential candidates? I am disappointed with the choices of the major parties. The Democrats started out with outstanding candidates only to have Howard Dean and the DNC make the worst choice. The people did not select BO. As I see it BO has already lost 18 million votes. Abuse from the Democrats and Republicans has got to come to an end.

  5. Answer to why no Nader:

A nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people. Seems to also apply to corporate political parties (Quote is from John F. Kennedy).

  6. The voters have a right to hear the views of the minor candidates, at least the top three or so. Why is the korporate media afraid to include Nader, McKinney and Barr? Are they being controlled by the over-powerful DNC and RNC? How about those who don’t care for either “major” candidate? Put these other choices in the debates! Ralph Nader has done more, over a lifetime, for the safety and well-being of the American people than any of the blowhard career pols running! And he is utterly un-corruptible! Can we say that about the majors? Put them all on a stage, and then we will have a real debate!

  7. How come Ralph Nader isn’t in this debate? Are they afraid of him. THOUGHT THIS WAS A DEMOCRATIC SYSTEM. SEEMS MORE SOCIALIST TO ME! Neither of them answered the first question. Tell us some things we don’t know. Is this what we’re down to now? I fear for our future in the hands of a democratic or republican party. Vote Nader

  8. A couple of months ago, Obama said “I love the market.” Well, now we see his love child–and it turns out to be Rosemary’s Baby! Unlike Obama and that other mouthpiece of Wall Street, Ralph Nader predicted the collapse of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. How come we don’t get to hear a representative of the people debate, instead of these corporate cutouts?

  9. I agree, we need Nader in the debate to keep these corparate puppets in line and honest. How can you be for getting spending in line but for keeping a trillion dollar war going McCain?

  10. Where is Ralph Nader?

  11. let the american people hear the truth open the door and let NADER in

  12. McCain and Obama are only going to tell you what you want to hear and then bash the other. Nader is the only one that is really for the people. And they won’t let the people have a
voice in the debates. Free the Debates Stop the Media Black-Out!!!!!!!!

  16. Watching a live debate or a summer re-run? What is new the same lies are repeated once again. Imagine Democracy with all the candidates debating, Nader, McKinney, Barr and Hamilton? Give voters a real choice in this critical election. Vote against Corporate Greed, wasteful military spending, and corporate control of the media. Prosecute all the corporate criminals. DEMAND OPEN DEBATES. Nader is the best choice for POTUS.

  19. What are you talking about obama was just talking about he wants to prevent the money from going to big oil company and corprate fat cats and he has a plan to withdrawl the troops and he was talking about how the military budget is too expensive at 10billion dollars a month and how he is going to vut funding for that. Too much talking is going on and nobody is listening. You people have to shut up and listin to whats really going on instead of pushing your own ideals and only listining to that.

    Report Comment

  20. Corporate-owned politicians say a lot of things when the people are watching. Obama said he would vote against the FISA bill too…
Pushing our own ideals? Isn’t that what the two major parties are doing by shutting out third party candidates? Yes, we have to shut up and listen to the messages that are fed to us through the media. That’s exactly what the debate commission is telling us.

  21. Here’s something that you dont see much or is almost non-existant now a days.. A drywall expert came over to fix a hole in the wall, we got into an intellectual discussion about how things are going in America and we came to a select few solutions one was mentioned by him and we were both unanimous..get rid of the IRS!! Instead create a federal sales tax ( no states exempt, that includes utah and alaska). Another was mentioned by me.. get rid of all credit score ratings. It is getting so bad that businesses won’t even hire you if you have bad credit!! Like “AMSCOT”. The American way of life is constantly halted with both of them. Remove them and watch American financial confidence grow! By the way, He is a Democrat, and I am a Republican. :) Perhaps there is still hope.

  22. No Ralph Nader = No Debate. I can’t believe Americans put up with this. It make me sick to think that we run around the globe claiming to spread democracy and we don’t even demand it here. Wake up people, you’re being run by corporations. Thankfully those of us who do our due diligence and research our candidates have Ralph Nader. The mainstream media can eat it. I’ve cancelled my TV and phone service, hopefully more people will do the same.

  23. I’m voting for Ralph. I’ve never voted in my life. That’s because I wasen’t convinced (or inspired) by any of the “chosen” candidates. Today, I’m sending my money to Ralph. And I’ve registered to vote for only honest man there.

  24. I have to concur with others here — why was Nader not involved in the debate? This rank stifling of other views by the media is tired and old. As Americans we prize free speech and the spinning by the two parties of answers to placate their corporate sponsors is a disservice to us all! The next debate REQUIRES RALPH!

    Report Comment

  25. Yes Ryan I have cancelled my cable too! I can no longer tolerate the bias and propaganda. I only watch some OTA channels. Saw the PBS program on Nader ‘An Unreasonable Man’. Nader should be considered a national hero for his public service. Nader is the only candidate with valid solutions to our Nation’s problems.

  26. Hmmm. My post stating factual information about who is excluding Nader from the debates and why has mysteriously disappeared. Freedom of speech – nope. Freedom to state facts – forget about it. I never expected this…hope everyone in America will come to their senses and vote Nader – he’s the only one who can even begin to help this country.

  27. I’m listening to the “debate” and i have to assume that if Nader was in the debate these corporate candidates would address the issues without the thick layer of rhetoric.

Maybe if Nader was in the debate someone would call barack on his belief that venezuela is a threat to our national security.

  28. First off I want to say that I am a middle class mother of 4. I’m curious about Obama. First he says he will lower taxes for some and raise taxes for others and now watching the debate he says he wants to lower 95% of Americans taxes. If he does that, where is the money going to come from to cover the money we are not paying in taxes? The government? The country is already in debt. He will undoubtedly bankrupt this country. Sure taxcuts sound great, but not if means we we bankrupt this country! He also keeps bringing up history. He obviously does not know his history himself. If he did, he would salute his flag when they play our national anthem! He said he doesn’t want to offend anyone such as those against war. Well the national anthem developed from a poem written in the early 1800’s during or following the Brittish attack on the US. That is why it says “bombs bursting in air” ect. We are saying we will not sit by and watch you destroy our country! We will fight back for our people, our land, our freedom! Same thing goes for our money (in God we trust), the Pledge of Allegience (under God), ect… If he can not be proud of our history, our heritage, our foundation, then he has no business being in this country little on running it! He calls himself a Christian, but mocks the bible in several places. How can we even consider voting him in?

  30. Obama clearly can keep his composure and think before he speaks. He has a clear plan of action to ensure in his belief the best future for my children and yours! The scare tactics, to live in fear of everything is the foundation of McCain’s campaign and the “bombs bursting in air” to me states we will not be afraid. To me right now we need to fight for the middle class, the ones who are fighting to raise families and have seen nothing but disaster and stagnent leadership for the past 8 years, Obama is fighting for us. Obama talked specifics and issues and most important solutions instead of throwing stones and he did it with Presidential Class!

  31. i would like to say that even though bush is not liked by many he did manage to keep this country free of terrorism and now that we have a democrat in the house im not sure that the us will continue to stay free of terrorist attacks being that obama will pull out all troops and all that fighting we did was for nothing…people really didint vote on the most important issue and that was to have national security…very dissapointed…

    Report Comment

  32. obama really is in way over his head….the whole reason we live in america is bc it is a free country and safe …..not anymore…national security is most importamnt…if ur not safe forget the rest of the stuff…terrorist waited for this moment and im dissapointed and have more fear now than ever…
amd another thing…why should the people that worked hard and went to school and have their own buisness should be liable to pay more taxes bc they make more money…i dont agree with that…u the middle class and lower class dont pay for rich peoples taxes and help us out so why should we help u guys out…go to school and achieve….dont just sit and rely on rich peoples taxes to be raised…
