First, the straw poll info:
Senator Barack Obama scored a victory among progressive activists Wednesday, winning the Politico.com Straw Poll of attendees at the Take Back America Conference in Washington.
Obama received 29% of the 720 votes cast in the straw poll, narrowly beating out former North Carolina Senator John Edwards, and decisively knocking official front-runner Hillary Clinton into third place.
Edwards took 26% of the vote and Clinton 17%.
Which indicates that Obama’s brand of liberalism is acceptable.
Hillary’s somewhat positive statements towards our soldiers drew sharp criticism:
“We’re going to end the war in Iraq and finally bring home the troops,” she said as a number of Code Pink protesters stood up in the audience. When she declared, “The American military has done its job,” boos began to be heard around the room. As the boos increased, Sen. Clinton raised her voice. “The American military has succeeded,” she said, to more boos. “It is the Iraqi government that has failed to make the tough decisions.” Still more boos.
So to even hint that the American military has done it’s job, or “succeeded” draws boos from people who “support the troops, but not the war.” Apparently expressing any positive sentiment toward the US Military at the Take Back American conference is a sin.
Basically the liberal wing of the Democratic Party thinks Hillary is too moderate. However, I think she’s in the right spot in my opinion. Sure, the lefties like Obama because he’s flamingly liberal, but that won’t carry him through primaries. However, Hillary’s moderate liberal stance will garner more mainstream votes.
